CIVITAS INITIATIVE
Begin with Love Video Available
Civitas Initiative, a national non profit communications group, has distributed 3.6 million copies of a new video, Begin With Love, to hospitals across the country. Designed for parents and caregivers and hosted by Oprah Winfrey, the 30-minute video is focused around five guidelines to help create a responsive and enriching environment for infants.
Civitas produced the video to help parents and caregivers learn more about the necessary tools in child development and care. With many parents having little exposure to information on the importance of the relationship between the child and parent/caregiver and how this affects a baby's ability to learn, this new video--which goes home with newborns as they leave the hospital--can help.
Highlights in the video include:
Personal Care It is important for new mothers to take care of themselves as new relationships with infants can be helped when the adults in their lives and healthy and focused.
Provide a Warm and Loving Environment Affection is key to a baby's growth and development. A happy newborn is more open to learning.
Talk, Sing, and Read The newborn brain is especially interested in sound, words and music and talking, singing, and reading are some of the best ways to connect to infants.
Create a Predictable Environment Providing routines, especially around sleep and feeding, lets infants know that they can depend on caregivers. In turn, they will spend less energy fussing and more time learning.
Understanding and Responding to A Baby's Needs When parents and caregivers respond to infants, you show that they can communicate their needs building a trust in you and the world around them.

Begin With Love offers information for caregivers--as well as parents. Childcare programs may want to obtain copies of the video for use by staff or to add to a parent lending library by contacting a local hospital near you (ask for one of their copies for your program) or through Civitas, 800-TO-BEGIN, www.civitas.org.
