Child Passenger Safety
for Childcare Providers
The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) and the Healthy Child Care America (HCCA) campaign, in partnership with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), have developed the following resources to help health professionals, childcare providers, and parents protect children and reduce caregiver liability while transporting children:
Child Passenger Safety:
Protecting Children and Reducing Liability in ChildCare
This comprehensive brochure educates childcare providers and health professionals about the safest way to transport children and addresses driver criteria, supervision, loading-zone plans, staff education, and policy procedure and development.
Child Passenger Safety Resource Kit
This resource kit contains relevant child passenger safety information for childcare providers, including model transportation policies, sample release forms, safety checklists, AAP brochures, and a poster of the top 10 child passenger safety tips. The kit is available Fall 2001.
Moving Kids Safely in ChildCare
The first national occupant-protection curriculum for childcare providers and administrators, Moving Kids Safely supports the guidelines for safe transportation recommended in Caring for Our Children--National Health and Safety Performance Standards: Guidelines for Out-of-Home Child Care Programs and incorporates lectures, discussions, and hands-on activities for instructing providers on how to properly install car seats.
The HCCA campaign is sponsored by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Child Care Bureau and Maternal and Child Health Bureau and is coordinated in partnership with the AAP.
