Grandparents can have a profound effect on the lives of their grandchildren, just as grandchildren can greatly impact their grandparents' lives. Grandparents enrich a grandchild's life in so many ways---by playing and reading, sharing life lessons and family history, listening and lending advice, providing stability to the family, and offering emotional, spiritual, and financial support. Many grandparents find themselves in the role of caregiver for their grandchildren and provide childcare to the young children while their parents work. Grandparenting: Enriching Lives is a new video produced by the Civitas Initiative that can help grandparents care for young children. Narrated by Maya Angelo, a Pulitzer prize winning author, this video can help grandparents create a unique grandparent identity involving lifestyle, interests, relationships with the children's parents, and the changing needs and interests of the children. Due to new research and health and safety issues, many attitudes and approaches to child-rearing have changed over the past 20 years. Grandparents today must keep current by reading the books and magazines that their children are reading and by talking to other parents and grandparents.
