CIVITAS INITIATIVE

"Grandparenting: Enriching Lives" Video

Grandparents can have a profound effect on the lives of their grandchildren, just as grandchildren can greatly impact their grandparents' lives. Grandparents enrich a grandchild's life in so many ways---by playing and reading, sharing life lessons and family history, listening and lending advice, providing stability to the family, and offering emotional, spiritual, and financial support.

Many grandparents find themselves in the role of caregiver for their grandchildren and provide childcare to the young children while their parents work. Grandparenting: Enriching Lives is a new video produced by the Civitas Initiative that can help grandparents care for young children. Narrated by Maya Angelo, a Pulitzer prize winning author, this video can help grandparents create a unique grandparent identity involving lifestyle, interests, relationships with the children's parents, and the changing needs and interests of the children.

Due to new research and health and safety issues, many attitudes and approaches to child-rearing have changed over the past 20 years. Grandparents today must keep current by reading the books and magazines that their children are reading and by talking to other parents and grandparents. Since grandparents are often the first people parents go to for advice, it is important that information provided is not out of date. For example:

  • Parents no longer resist the impulse to pick up their crying baby since recent research shows that does not contribute to "spoiling" a child.
  • Babies are now put to sleep on their backs, not their stomachs, to minimize the risk of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS).
  • When riding in a car, even for the shortest distances, parents put babies in their car seats. In fact, car seats are required by law.
  • Research shows that spanking children leads to aggression and lack of self control. Parents today are advised to choose other methods of discipline, such as "time outs," instead of spanking.
