Emergency Kits
Knowledge Learning Corporation (KLC) and SAFE (Safer America for Everyone) are distributing free child emergency kits to parents and childcare providers nationwide. The Children's Discovery Center, operated by KLC, was located at 5 World Trade Center and destroyed in the Sept. 11 disaster. An emergency card used by the center helped parents reunite with their children following the disaster.
KLC and SAFE have teamed up to make something good come out of the tragedy of September 11--the KLC-SAFE Child Emergency Kit. The kit includes: "How Parents Can Help Their Children,"--activities and resources for disaster preparedness and "Questions to Ask Your Child Care Provider,"--questions to ask a childcare provider regarding disaster preparedness, and the enhanced emergency card containing detailed information such as a child's fingerprints
The emergency card includes space for information on a child to include their name and address, emergency contacts, height, weight, eye color, hair color, identifying characteristics, and blood type as well as physician contact, insurance provider, and specific medical information.
A checklist is included that can be given to parents. This checklist has information that a parent can ask of a childcare program regarding disaster preparedness such as who has first aid training, where emergency numbers are posted, and where the disaster relocation site for the center is located.
Materials in the kit are easily photocopied for distribution to parents. The emergency can also can be photocopied so that each child in your childcare program has one on file.
