Emergency Planning

When planning for an emergency, having information and resources from local or federal agencies can be helpful. Locally, you might contact your health department, fire department, police or American Red Cross chapter for planning guides and information.

The American Red Cross has a number of publications to help with emergency planning. Community Disaster Education Materials are produced by the Red Cross and other national organizations who share common goals with the Red Cross to help people prepare for, respond to, and cope with emergencies. Also included are videos, and materials for teachers and caregivers. Many materials are available online.

The American Red Cross has a special website, www.prepare.org, devoted to preparing for emergencies. The children’s section of this site offers information--both online and in hard copy--that can be useful such as coloring books and workbooks.

The Federal Emergency Management Agency’s Community and Family Preparedness Program developed a brochure in cooperation with the American Red Cross’ Community Disaster Education Program titled Helping Children Cope with Disaster. Both are national efforts to help people prepare for disasters of all types.

The Protecting Our Kids from Disaster kit prepared by the Institute for Business Home and Safety (IBHS) is available to help make childcare centers more secure during earthquakes, floods, hurricanes, wildfires and other natural catastrophes. Protecting Our Kids is a public service program that promotes safety and involves nonstructural retrofits in childcare centers across the country to help prevent damage caused by natural disasters.

The kit includes a step-by-step checklist for project leaders, an information video that shows examples of possible retrofits in childcare centers and how to do them, and a booklet that puts the how-to information into handy, easy-to-use instructions.

For more information, contact your local or state office of emergency management and your local Red Cross chapter.
