The National Association for Sport and Physical Education (NASPE) has available a new publication, Appropriate Practices in Movement Programs for Young Children. Movement programs for young children require special attention and considerations. This document addresses key aspects of instructional strategies and program development that are essential to the delivery of quality movement programs for young children. Written for those caring for young children ages 3-5, this 20-page booklet describes physical education practices that are in the best interest of children. They include guidelines for curriculum design, learning experience, fitness activities, fitness testing, assessment, participation levels, forming groups, etc. The importance and value of movement for young children are being recognized as an important role in development. During movement activities, children use multiple sensory modalities creating neural connections across numerous pathways in the brain. The branching of these connections is one of the first steps in wiring the brain for future learning.
