In Sickness and Health: Growing Pains in Children

What are growing pains? Non-specific pain, usually in the legs, that is not caused by injury, fatigue, or other condition. The pain usually occurs at night or at nap time.

At what age are growing pains most common? Usually between the ages of three- five and then between eight-12.

What are some signals that pain is not growing pain, and should be referred to a health care provider? Fever, redness, and swelling in one or more joints; Persistent pain or pain in the morning; Pain associated with a particular injury; limping; weakness; tiredness, unusual rashes, etc.

Safety First: Burn Safety

What are the most common causes of burns for young children? Common household appliances and substances, including hot metals, scalding liquids, steam, or flames.

What are some ways to prevent thermal burns? Make burners and hot pot handles hard to reach; Keep cords of appliances high and behind these appliances; Set water heaters at 120 F (list others...)

What is the best treatment for a minor burn? Minor burns with unbroken skin should be submerged in or flooded with cool (not ice cold) water for at least five minutes.

Will ointments or butter help a burn? NO! Never apply ointments, creams, medications, butter, ice, oil spray, or any household remedy to treat a burn.

Medicine Chest: Helping Young Children Manage Anger

Is anger normal for young children? Yes. It is a natural adaptive response to threatening or aggravating situations.

How can I help children deal with their anger and prevent aggressive behavior? Teach children how to make “I Feel” statements, using words instead of actions to communicate how they feel.

How can I calm an angry child? Get on the same level and use friendly eye contact and gentle gestures to distract the child; Communicate with a firm but gentle voice; be clear and consistent; Empathize with children.

Health & You: Feeling Blue?

I sometimes feel sad for no reason. Is this depression? Occasionally feeling sad or down in the dumps is a normal part of day-to-day life. But feeling depressed for extended periods of time can indicate something more serious.

What are some warning signs of depression? Persistent sad, anxious, or “empty” mood; Difficulty concentrating, remembering, or making decisions; Restlessness and irritability; Feelings of hopelessness and pessimism; Loss of interest or pleasure in hobbies and activities that were once enjoyed.

What can I do during the day to handle depression? Whenever possible, allow yourself 5-10 minutes of solitude to relax, meditate, or gather your thoughts. Get outside and get physical! Avoid caffeinated beverages.
