In Sickness and Health: Mental Health of Toddlers in Childcare
Is it okay for a toddler to use a pacifier? Yes. A pacifier or thumb sucking is a comfort measure for many toddlers.
What are basic limits or rules for toddlers? Two basic rules are: (1) do not hurt yourself, and (2) do not hurt others or property.
How can I deal with a child who throws temper tantrums? First, prevent situations that trigger tantrums. During a tantrum, either leave the child alone (if no safety issues) or hold and comfort the child.
How can I help a child who is afraid of thunderstorms? Try explaining what thunder is. If the child is still afraid, offer him a magic wand or other security measure.

What is the first rule of safety? Supervision.
What are some diseases spread through the fecal/oral route? Hepatitis, typhoid, giardiasis

How can children develop social skills? Through play. Help each child learn to join other children and find their place in games.
What should I do about agressive behavior? Calmly step in between the children to prevent further aggression. Comfort the child who was hurt. Tell the offending child that I do not like it when you (hit, hurt).
How can I prevent aggressive behavior? Look for a pattern to the aggressive behavior. Try to alleviate the situation before it escalates into aggression.
What are some good role modeling habits? Smile and laugh often, keep your voice pleasant and reassuring, avoid shouting or yelling, present an encouraging outlook in all situations.
Safety First: CPR
Is CPR training required? Many states require CPR certification, but not all.
I was certified in CPR several years ago. Do I need recertification? Yes. The guidelines have changed and current certification is recommended.
When might CPR be needed for children? Near-drowning, electric shock, smoke inhalation, etc.
Where can I get CPR training? Your local Red Cross or American Heart Association chapter.
Nutrition Action: Nutrition from the Garden
What are some educational benefits of gardening? Children may gain appreciation for the foods served at mealtime, and other materials (pretend foods, picture books, etc.) become more real to children.
What can we grow in a very small space? Herbs, lettuce.
What are fast growing vegetables? Radishes.
Are there fruits or vegetables to avoid in a garden? Hot peppers, mushrooms, rhubarb.
Medicine Chest: Teach Children Handwashing
Does handwashing really help prevent illness? Yes! Both CDC and FDA recommend handwashing to prevent illness.
What are some child behaviors that spread germs? Thumb sucking, putting objectives in their mouths, and lack of control of bodily fluids.
What are some ways to teach handwashing? Sing songs while scrubbing, read books, send home parent information.
Health & You: Carpal Tunnel Syndrome
What is the carpal tunnel? It is a narrow canal in the wrist through which tendons and nerves connect the forearm to the hand.
What causes Carpal Tunnel Syndrome? Any activity that involves extensive and repetitive wrist movement can lead to it.
What are some symptoms? Minor tingling or weakness in the hand, or awakening in the morning to swollen or numb fingers. Chronic pain and loss of motor function can occur.
What are the treatment options? Rest and avoidance of the repetitive activity; using a wrist brace to prevent further injury; ice packs, and stretching exercises. Surgery may be needed.
